I have never been one for New Year’s resolutions.
However, those who know me will agree that I am forever on one diet or another, and with the turning over of the calendar, I am pretty sure there are many of you out there looking to do the same. Which is why Ellen Hawley’s newest book, The Divorce Diet, is so aptly being released in a few days – just in time for one to reassess exactly where they are in life and where they are heading.
The Divorce Diet tells the story of Abigail, an ostensibly happy woman and mother of infant Rosie, whose entire life goes up in flames the night she prepares a special birthday dinner for her husband, Thad, and he announces quite without preamble that “this whole marriage thing” is not working for him.
Seriously? That line in itself tells one about all they need to know about dear old Thad! And as for Abigail’s ostensible happiness, she comes to the rapid realization that she was not nearly as happy as she had thought.
Abigail then commences a 40-day journey of introspection and re-examination of her relationships, not just with her soon-to-be ex-husband, but with her parents, her child, and her peers. Aided by her imaginary and hilariously judgmental diet guru and author of her latest “non-dieting” diet book, Abigail religiously tracks her meal plans, snacks and exercise, her entries becoming more and more ludicrous as the book progresses.
“For lunch I’m supposed to eat a “Skinny Minnie” sandwich. This is a low-calorie hot dog bun filled with half a cup of shredded zucchini and carrots, one slice of low-fat luncheon meat, and two ounces of shredded plastic, and topped with half a tablespoon of nonfat mayonnaise, half a talespoon of nonfat plain yogurt, one set of quotation marks, and dashes of lemon juice, pepper, onion powder, and airplane glue. For dessert, I get one medium apple stem.
“It’s odd, but I don’t feel hungry…”
Drifting through the layers of grief and betrayal, life back with her parents, dead end jobs and the realization that her husband has well and truy moved on, Abigail rediscovers her love of life, and her passion for cooking. Ironically, in failing utterly at her “non-diet” diet, she also manages to shed a few unwanted pounds in the process. Her journey from the abject depths of depression to a successful and joyful life, her happy ending and new beginning, is well worth reading.
As an added bonus, I can promise you more than a few laugh out loud moments along the way. Ms. Hawley is a touching and insightful writer who somehow manages to mix the serious with the seriously funny without losing her edge. For anyone who appreciates a razor wit and wry humor, they will absolutely love The Divorce Diet… bon apetit!
