Obsessive Percussive Disorder

It would be fair to say that I tend to be a tad obsessive on occasion.

Oh, who am I kidding? I am obsessive pretty much all the time. Though the subjects of said obsession come and go, this quality has been pretty much a constant throughout my life to date.

My first two years here in England, enthralled with owning an actual piano for the first time in my married life, I spent more or less chained to the bench and self-teaching up to a level 5 or perhaps 6 on a good day. Good enough to play Moonlight Sonata and Fur Elise, but never quite mastering beyond the first section of Clair de Lune. You get the picture.

About a decade ago I took up guitar. I tackled it with the passion of all new converts and mastered the basics. I’ll never play John Mayer (who can?), but I can bash my way through Ring of Fire with ease. You’d be amazed what you can play with three chords!

Now on to my current passion: The bodhran (Celtic drum). I’ve actually got pretty good at it and know my reels from my jigs and hornpipes. To the puzzlement of my postman calling at 8 a.m. sharp, I spend a couple of mornings a week sitting on the sofa in my pjs beating and clicking out rhythms on my drum while the Irish music blares.

Even I have to admit, that is a bit weird, and when I’ll ever get opportunity to use such a skill remains to be seen. But one never knows.

My family is pretty much convinced I’m crazy anyway, so this is par for the course. They roll their eyes, pat me on the head and smile indulgently before firmly closing the door and saying a prayer that this obsession will finally peter itself out and I can move on to another, quieter, flight of fancy. Like macramé or watercolour… better yet, getting those buttons sewn back on my husband’s coat before they all go…

Having said that, I’m fairly certain I have used up all my crazy allowance for the year and probably need to cool it and lay low for a while. Every family, however extraordinarily tolerant, has its limits.

Update: Me and my Inner Whitney Houston have a couple of vocal performances coming up in August. Hmmm… Do you think anybody would think I was crazy to include some Irish drum in the act? Don’t answer. I think we all know the answer to that question…

  1. Am glad I’m not the only one who’s a bit on the obsessive side (okay a lot on the obsessive side). I see no problem with a few percussive tendencies at all….probably great for keeping stress down and actually, there is a competition for the bodhran so maybe you’re on your way to becoming world-famous, huh? Thinking you should check out the next date of competition (you would be in the senior division just so you know…no cheating!)

      • I would ask, “How many people could there possibly be that would be there to enter this competition?” but I know even in something as abstract as this…there’s always gonna be someone to show up and win. Ahhh… Okay, then a few weeks/years, whatever you decide….just thought perhaps if you did the competition you would get it a bit out of your system thereby sparing those head-patters in your midst…..but knowing you, you’d probably go the other way and practice even more since winning competition would definitely mean you were destined for greater arenas in same discipline. 🙂

  2. I say let your inner Groucho shine through. Me, I intend to retire to Lichtenstein and learn how to yodel. I know. It doesn’t make sense. But what the hey.
